Aspyr has now released patch 1.04 for the US version following the release of the expansion.

For those that are not getting the expansion, but want to be able to multiplay with everyone else here it is

Yes and it also makes it possible for expansionless people to play with people that have the expansion according to the file description.

The add-on included a patch, but there was a problem with the multiplayer, so 1.04 was needed for all versions of the game to be compatible again.

I have a version of Anno 1701. It is in English. This may sound weird, but I don't know if I must download the US patch or the German one. I wasn't sure if there was a UK version so right clicked the Anno1701.exe file and looked in properties. I got the version 1.0.0.1584, but under language I said German. Do I download the US Version? How do I know which version I have?

Just try. The patch won't install if you have the wrong language. Try the US-patch first for it is at least the same (or shall we say somewhat similar) spoken language.

If the game is in English and the game title is Anno 1701, then most likely you have the UK version of the game. The US version is titled 1701 AD.

You might also check and see who the distributor of the game is and check their website.

It's called Anno 1701 which as you say is the UK version. Is there a patch for that or do I download the german patch?

Well I went to ftp://ftp.kochmedia.com/pub/Anno1701 as suggested by someone here and downloaded the UK 1.4 patch.So far the game seems to run well.
An interesting thing is that when I checked to Anno.exe file by right clicking on it the file version ends up as 2.0.0.1903 However, the patch readme has this:

This is a voice from your past! I now have 1701 too love it and wish I had known about the beta test. Guess that is what happens when you don't go online forever. Installed the patch a few weeks ago and it has made a big difference in the game play

This is the only official English speaking Anno forum, for all four Anno games together. Dawn of Discovery is Anno 1404, but the patch mentioned here is for Anno 1701, so you can't use it for Dawn of Discovery.
